Shubenacadie Canal

Tue May 25, 11:01 PM

This Saturday I had the pleasure of being part of a guided tour of the Shubenacadie Canal, which has four locks in East Hants.  There are some original parts still in existence and there are recreated locks.  We also saw incline planes.  The engineering and labour to create this travel route far exceeded the use of the canal, which only operated for ten years.  It was replaced by the railroad.  Ironically, boats came up the canal with wood to help build the railway.  The final blow was a railway bridge too low for boats to pass under.  The ShubenacadieRiver and Canal offer so much history.  It’s a beautiful place to explore and the Fairbanks Centre in Dartmouth offers exhibits and details on the Canal.
