Volunteer awards

Sun May 08, 1:19 PM

Congratulations to Ged Stonehouse on receiving The Shining Star Award for his dedication to many volunteer groups.  The following is what the nomination said:

“Ged doesn’t know the meaning of the word no when community groups are looking for help.  He is always ready with time, ideas and passion.

He is involved whether it is cleaning up litter in the ball field or helping install the banners he designed to welcome people to Shubenacadie.  You will always know Ged is involved in community projects whether he is visible or working hard in the background.

He designed and maintains our Shubie.ca web side which is available to all groups.  This has helped avoid scheduling conflicts through the use of the interactive calendar enabling more participation in all community events..  This web site is critical to achieving his vision of our community as a single entity.

Without Ged, Shubie would not have had the total community participation in the Torch Relay, nor would residents and school children have enjoyed meeting our gold medalist, Tracy Cameron, at a reception he organized and MC’d.

Ged’s passion, enthusiasm and commitment to the betterment of our community are contagious.”

I am proud to stand beside Ged in this picture, and more importantly, to be there, participating in events resulting from his hard work.

In addition, Deryk Sandford was nominated, and also won a Shining Star Award.  His nomination recognizes him as a wonderful role model for the youth in our community.  He is always helping where he can, whether it’s watering plants, putting up wreathes and hanging baskets or working on The MacInnis Trail.  He is always there when you need him and he takes the initiative to do what needs to be done without being asked.

On behalf of our whole community, I extend my heartfelt thanks to these two Shining Stars, who make Shubenacadie a better place to live.

I don’t have a picture of Deryk, but will soon.
