Celebrating the Visit of the Olympic Torch

November 17, 2009 Shubenacadie had the opportunity to welcome the Olympic Torch on its run zigzagging across the country. It was an exciting time for Shubie. People lined the streets... schools brought their students to the centre of town... businesses put flags in their windows.

Our own Olympic Medal winner Tracy Cameron was flown home for the event and she accompanied the Torch through the Village. Tracy Visited each of the Schools:

  • Shubenacadie Elementary - addressed the kids in the Gym giving them a motivational talk about life
  • LSK at Indian Brook - had all their students gather in the foyer to welcome Tracy with traditional drumming and singing and then O Canada
  • East Hants Rural High - Tracy was warmly greeted in the Gymnasium and again spoke to the kids and then took time to sign autographs and take pictures with the kids

Tracy is such a great ambassador for our Village. She took time to do a Welcome Video for our Website.
That evening Shubie hosted a celebration of the Olympics and Tracy at the Community Hall - the place was packed - Torch Bearers Todd Williams and George Searle were there in uniform - there were lots of pictures taken - slide show and special video presentation prepared by Kevin MacInnis.

This was an event we will all remember for years to come. Thank you Tracy for helping make it soooo special...
